I’VE NEVER GOTTEN MY BROWS PROFESSIONALLY SHAPED

by Ariana Pezeshki

This is me, by the way. To give you an idea of what I’m working with – my brows are sparse in the center, but get thicker on the ends. So weird. When I was in my teens I didn’t fill them in, and I just plucked stray hairs and in between the brows to avoid the Frida Kahlo look. As I got a bit older, I then started to pay attention to celebs like Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Ashley Benson on Pretty Little Liars (still my secret shame fave show guys) and just found myself admiring their brows. *creep alert*.

It inspired me to start thinking about my own more seriously. I had no actual brow products to work with, so to make do I started filling in the bare areas of my brows with eye shadow from the first Urban Decay NAKED palette, in the light brown colour – Naked.

Urban Decay @ Mecca Naked Palette, $83 I liked the bolder, more polished look it gave me, and I was satisfied with that for a while. Shaping came naturally through this process – I’d start out by filling in my brows to the shape I liked, and then I’d notice the stray hairs that stood out beyond this arched shape, so I’d pluck them out. Boom, done! Eventually I wanted a bolder, more defined brow, so I started using a simple brow pencil. I’d just start by making a little notch at the high point of my brow to create an arch, then outline under and above my brows and use the spoolie to blend – I still use a pencil today for quick application, but I’ve kind of moved on to brow pomade.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade @ Sephora, $32 After years of watching beauty YouTubers and getting a feel for brow products, Jaclyn Hill got me onto Anastasia Beverly Hills. Anastasia is known for her brow products, and once I discovered Dipbrow Pomade I’ve never looked back. Dipbrow is a must have for me these days. I’m a little addicted and I can’t leave the house without it on my face.

I follow the same technique by finding the high point of my brow and start outlining from there – then continue from bottom to the top filling in sparse areas with an angled brush, defining and darkening to my heart’s content.

So in a nutshell, that’s the history of my brows. Just remember ladies, your brows are sisters not twins, ok?

I have a little secret to tell you. I’ve never gotten my brows done. That’s right –I’ve never been waxed, threaded, or plucked by a professional.

I have nothing against professional brow shaping. But due to a deep (possibly irrational) fear of  leaving a salon with half my brow missing, or the shape totally being off,  I’ve just never been game to let someone else touch them. Maybe it’s the control freak in me that needs everything to be perfect – hello trust issues!
