"You look tired"

by Ariana Pezeshki

“You look tired.”

Thats what a man decided to say to me today as I walked on my way to the train station, He might as well have said,

“you look like shit today.”

That really is the equivalent to a remark like that.

What gives a total stranger, especially a man, the authority to tell a woman on the street that she looks tired? Would he say that to another man? Is that the proper way to spark conversation?

It ruined my day.

The rest of the walk home all I could think about was why he said that, and how awful do I really look for a complete stranger on the street to feel the need to come up and say that to me?

Were other people thinking the same?

A stranger shouldn’t have that control over me, or you, or anyone.

I should have made a snide remark back like, “yeah asshole, I’m tired” or “thank you so much for the kind comment.”

But really, when you’re put in a situation like that you’re shocked into silence.

I dislike that the most, that he took my voice away.

No man should treat a woman like that, my looks are none of your concern.
